Importance of Biosafety & Biosecurity for laboratory workers stressed

Dow Center of Excellence (COE), Dow University of Health Sciences in collaboration with Health Security Partners (USA) organized hands-on training workshop on important and relevant topic of Biosafety & Biosecurity a neglected but crucial aspect of laboratory: Awareness and training session for laboratory workers at Ojha Campus. 

The aim of this workshop was to introduce the clinical laboratory workers to basic concepts and principles of biosafety and biosecurity. This workshop also provided hands on training to the participants regarding proper use of Personal Protective Equipments, Spill management and response to needle stick injury.

During the workshop hands on training was given to the participants belonging to different laboratories from Karachi and Hyderabad including Dow Diagnostic Reference and Research laboratory, Indus Hospital laboratory, Liaqat National Hospital, Chugtai Lab, Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center, Dr. Punjawani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, Liaquat University of Health, and Medical Science (LUMS) ,  Isra University Hospital, etc.

The Inaugural Ceremony was presided over by Vice Chancellor, DUHS Prof. Masood Hammed Khan stressed the need Biosafety & Biosecurity for laboratory workers working in the laboratory. He appreciated joint venture of DUHS and HSP to conduct a workshop on such an important and relevant topic and encouraged Dr. Saeed Khan and the organizers to continue and strengthen working with the HSP as HSP is doing a great job to facilitate us in Pakistan to help the humanity, and he assured that  DUHS will extend all possible support for the noble cause to serve the humanity.

Dr. Saeed Khan presented introduction to the workshop and its importance; he also introduced Health Security Partners (HSP) and its partnership with and institutions working to improve biosafety and biosecurity and mentioned that DUHS is the first HSP-COE collaborator in Pakistan.

During the lecture session Dr. Saeed Khan, The Associate Professor and the Biosafety Professional and Master Trainer, delivered an informative and interactive lecture, on “Introduction to Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity”.  Then hands on training were given to the participants on proper Donning and Doffing of Personal Protective Equipments, Spill Management, and response to Needle stick Injury and eye splash in which each of the participant was presented with real-time scenarios and trained to manage the incident during the bench work in laboratory. 

At the end certificates were distributed among participants and organizers. The concluding ceremony was chaired by Prof. Dr. Talat Mirza (Director IBMS and DRIBBS) along with Prof. Dr. Anwar Ali (Dean and Principal of DIKIOHS). They shared their views regarding the successful workshop and hands on training. They appreciated Dr Saeed Khan, the organizing committee and HSP for organizing such a wonderful and useful event.   All the participants were also impressed and really appreciated the workshop and all the arrangements made by the organizers, they urged that such workshop should be conducted on regular basis.
