Governor Sindh & Chancellor, Dow University of Health Science (DUHS) Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan said Liver Transplant Project of Dow University will largely benefit not only the people of Sindh province but also whole Pakistan. The project will be made functional soon in the university and project will prove a millstone for the people of the country. He said people from all over the country will benefit from this liver transplant project in near future. He shared these views while addressing Inaugural Ceremony of Bariatric Surgery Center of DUHS at Governor House Karachi. Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Prof Muhammad Jawaid, Justice (R) Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui and Dr Faiz ur Rehman and senior faculty members were also present on the occasion.
He further congratulated Dow University for establish Bariatric Surgery Center for first time in public sector to offer weight reduction program including surgical option. He said obesity is a becoming a major healthcare problem worldwide and has reached an epidemic proportion. Evidence continues to accumulate that obesity is a major risk factor for many diseases and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. He said Bariatric Surgery is currently the only modality that provides a significant, sustained weight loss for the patients who are morbidly obese.
He also acknowledged the philanthropic efforts of Dr. Faiz ur Rehman who has donated his personal property located in thickly area of Karachi, where healthcare services are much needed. In the building donated by him the Dow University will extend the healthcare services including diagnostic facilities.
In his address Prof. MasoodHameed Khan, Vice-Chancellor-DUHS recounted the progress of the University since its inception. He also highlighted the developments of the University. The University since its inception has been aiming to provide maximum possible health services to the community through various ways.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Jawaid on the occasion said that in an estimate 1.5 billion people are obese worldwide. Obesity is a health issue that has attracted concern only in the past few years. Bariatric Surgery Centre, Dow University of Health Sciences started Bariatric Surgery which is the most recent and advance surgery, sleeve gastrectomy which is highly safe and effective in loosing weight are being done in developed countries (UK & USA etc) Hall mark is that it is highly economic in this public center. Uptill now, the University has operated 20 cases which left negligible scare. The patient started reducing their weight and there no complication. The patients are enjoying life gradually loss of low body weight. Bariatric Surgeon are following our patients initially every week then monthly for counseling to take light and low caloric diet with advice of some daily physical activity.
Earlier, Dr. Faiz-ur-Rahman and Dr. Iqbal Pirzada also spoke on the occasion. A Mou Signing Ceremony was also held which was inked by Dr. Shaikh Nadeem Adhmed, Registrar, DUHS and philanthropic Dr. Faiz ur Rehman
Later on, Prof. MasoodHameed Khan presented DUHS momento to Dr. IshratUlEbad Khan.
