World Cancer Day celebrated at AEMC

Atomic Energy Medical Center, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Karachi to mark World Cancer Day 2014 organized a Symposium and Poster Competition among all the medical students of Karachi and Hyderabad region with the title of ‘Cancer Prevention is possible’ recently at JPMC Karachi.

Nuclear Scientist Dr. Tariq Suleja, Prof. Syed Hassan Manzoor Zaidi, Oncologist, Prof. Tariq Rafi, Vice Chancellor, Sind Medical University, Prof. Zaida Memon, Ziauddin Medical University and Dr. Mohammad Ali Memon, Director Atomic Energy Medical Center , JPMC attended the symposium besides hundreds of Medical Students and Health Care workers.

The Symposium was informative as comprises of awareness program in which experts talk about Cancer prevention and actions taken to lower the chance of getting cancer. They informed that by preventing cancer, the number of new cases of cancer in a group or population is lowered. It will also lower the number of deaths caused by cancer. They explained that cancer is not a single disease but a group of related diseases. Many things in our genes, our lifestyle and the environment around us may increase or decrease our risk of getting cancer.

Scientists at the Symposium also explained many different ways to help prevent cancer including the ways to avoid or control things known to cause cancer. The topics which discussed includes changes in diet and lifestyle, Finding precancerous conditions early, Precancerous conditions are conditions that may become cancer and Chemo/radio prevention (way to treat a precancerous condition or to keep cancer from starting).

The Symposium concluded with Prize and Certificate distribution. Winners received cash prizes from Sunmark Biotech.
