Workshop on ‘Infection Control Practices in HIV/AIDS Program’

A 2-day workshop on ‘Infection Control Practices in HIV/AIDS Program’ organized by Family Health International (FHI) in collaboration with Sindh AIDS Control Program (SACP) was held recently in Karachi.

The purpose of the workshop was to train medical assistants / lab technicians involved in safe practices in infection control and waste management; to provide technical advice based on the National and International guidelines.

The National Guidelines for Infection Control by National AIDS Control Program was adapted for the workshop and other manuals such as the WHO manual “Safe management of wastes from healthcare activities” were also used.    

The workshop was attended by a large number of participants from all four provinces of Pakistan including; implementing Agencies of FHI and SACP; Medical Assistants from NACP Pakistan Trucker’s Project and Pakistan AIDS Prevention and Care Project (PHAPCP); Medical Assistants and Technicians of different local NGOs working under Sindh AIDS Control Program. Representative from Center of Excellence SACP and Referral Laboratory SACP also attend the workshop.

Dr. Nasir Jalbani, Program Manager, Sindh AIDS Control Program, (SACP) emphasized the significance and importance of infection control practices. He appreciated the efforts of Family Health International in making the workshop a great success.

Dr. Ashraf Memon, Sindh Aids Control Program (SACP), stressed upon the importance of hand washing; facts and figures; benefits and technique of correct hand washing.

Dr. Khurram Shahzad, Family Health International, Islamabad, gave a presentation on ‘Risk Management in the HIV/AIDS Healthcare environment’. Points discussed were; environmental factors for infection transmission; safe water supply, air ventilation, cleaning of environment and laundry, appropriate design of rooms and operating area; reprocessing of instruments and equipments and its principles; methods of disinfection and various methods for sterilization.

Dr. Zulfiquar Amir Bashir, Family Health International, Islamabad, presented a detailed presentation on Infection Control. The key points discussed were; defining infection control; infection control programs; WHO statistics on needle prick infections; modes of transmission and chain of infection; blood borne infection and transmission; application of basic infection control precautions; standard precautions and additional precautions; airborne, droplet and contact precautions.

Earlier, Dr. Masuma Zaidi, Family Health International Islamabad, presented the principles and use of Personal Protective Equipment. Through a video, she demonstrated proper ways of hand washing with hand sanitizer.
