Workshop on HPLC Technique for research in Diagnosis and Treatmentof inflammatory Diseases at Dow University

Department of Molecular Pathology, Dow University of Health Sciences for the very first time in Pakistan organized three days hands-on training workshop in collaboration with Fulbright United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) at Dow Diagnostic Reference and Research Laboratory (DDRRL) to provide innovative scientific ideas of using reverse phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (rp-HPLC) for the evaluation of anti-inflammatory drugs and their mechanism of action at Dow University Ojha Campus, Karachi.

The Inaugural Ceremony was presided by the Acting Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. M. Umar Farooq. Dr. Iqbal Muhammad Chaudhry, Director, HEJ H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi speaking as the chief guest on the occasion emphasized the need to provide opportunities to the students of doing something for the nation. He also stressed to provide research facilities for the student and therefore students should be encouraged in the creativity.

Giving brief introduction on current education situation of Pakistan, he said that poverty, literacy is major problem of our nation. Utilization of the modern science technologies is the way forward whereas science has invertiginated the world completely. Science provides the foundation for credible decision-making. Only through adequate knowledge about the risks to human health and ecosystems, and innovative solutions to prevent pollution and reduce risk, can we continue to enjoy a high quality life.

Prof. M. Umar Farooq, Vice Chancellor, DUHS in his address stressed the need to impart education, knowledge and skills to the student. Education is the base of the nations and everybody knows the importance of education, no nation can survive without quality or modern education, that builds the nations and become the cause of prosperity it gives the path that leads towards bright feature so every country’s education policy should be made according to the era time and situation our religion.Every child has the right to get basic education. He said that currently our country is decline and there is no one who has wisdom and vision to sever the nation.

Dr. Shaheen Sharaft, Director DDRL spoke on Research Facility at Dow University.She said that the Dow Diagnostic & Research Laboratory has been established to provide reliable, high quality diagnostic services of International standard for routine and specialized tests for all socioeconomic segments of population. The tests are performed by a team of qualified and experienced technicians, supervised by Pathologists. The research facilities provide help to postgraduates of MPhil and PhD and student as well. Researchers are supported with the provision of tests at very low cost and with advance technology.

Dr. Saeed Khan, Head of Molecular Pathology Dept., DUHS gave the introduction of the Workshop. He informed that the workshop comprising with state-of-the-art techniques and interactive oral talks by the scientists of international repute that will enhance participant’s scientific skills and knowledge about modern techniques for biological research and therapeutics.

During the three days subject specific keynote lectures were delivered by the scientists including Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Bhanger (ICCBS), Prof. Dr. Ahsana DarFarooq (ICCBS), Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi (UOK), Dr. Saeed Khan (DUHS), Dr. Talat Roome (DUHS), Dr. Asif Qureshi (DUHS) and Dr. Kamran Azeem (ICCBS).The lectures covered Cellular, Molecular, Genomic and Metabolomics aspects of inflammatory and immunological diseases including rheumatoidarthritis, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and cancer.
