UNFPA meeting on Reproductive Health

To increase the understanding the concept and relationship between achieving universal access to Reproductive Health and MDGs, global policies on Reproductive Health Commodity Security and advocacy approaches to enhance the government commitment to achieve Millennium Development Goal (MDG), UNFPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Population Welfare, arranged meeting recently at Islamabad.

The Conference provided an opportunity for the parliamentarians, policy-makers, opinion-makers and media professionals to exchange their experiences and the lessons learnt for scaling up as best practice in their respective countries.

Nayyar Agha, Secretary Ministry of Population Welfare, stated that the ministry is already taking various new initiatives including the role of parliamentarians, religious leaders and media for improving the status of women, and removing gender disparities for creating awareness on RH issues among the masses.

Dr. M. Hulki Uz, Deputy Country Representative, UNFPA, highlighted that in view of the Plan of Action and Declaration signed by the SAARC countries at the Parliamentarians Conference in Kathmandu, UNFPA Pakistan is very keen to support the government of Pakistan in various activities towards: (1) increasing understanding of the concept and relationship between achieving universal access to reproductive health and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); (2) implementing RHCS policies to achieve universal access to reproductive health; (3) advocating for increased government resources and commitment; (4) setting up a media forum to exchange experiences among SAARC countries.

The expected outcome of the conference would be increased capacity of parliamentarians, key government officials, the media professionals and policy makers to advocate for reproductive health commodity security and improved understanding towards reproductive health as the key components to achieve MDGs.
