The 4th Annual Symposium of Dr. Ishrat-Ul-Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences on the theme “Setting Priorities for Oral Health” and Trade Exhibition was held recently at DIKIOHS SMC, Karachi with the stress to improve healthcare standard in Pakistan.

The symposium started with pre-symposium Workshops in DIKIOHS, SMC Campus, Karachi. The pre-symposium workshop covered five Dental Disciplines, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Surgery and Community Dentistry highlighting State-of-the-art techniques like Dental Implants, Mirco Implants, Zirconia Crowns and Atraumatic Restorative techniques.

Two hand-on pre-symposium workshop were organized  in the field of Orthodontics which deals with the proper alignment of Crooked teeth and Prosthodontics which deals with the fabrication of artificial  teeth replacement with fixed as well as removable prosthesis.

The Orthodontic workshop was conducted by Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed Incharge Department of Orthodontics and Dr. Gul-e-Erum Asst. Professor Orthodontics Department. The theme of the workshop was the placement of micro implant for anchorage this is the newest technology developed to align the melposed teeth, previously if the posterior tooth or teeth that is permanent molars were missing in the patient orthdontics treatment could not be done, with this techniques micro implants are directly fixed in place of missing tooth or above the compromised standing teeth, and forces are applied from this implants to full the teeth in desired position.

The second workshop on “Prosthodontics” was conducted by Dr. Muhammad Abbas Incharge Department of Prosthodontics. The topic of this hands on workshop was tooth preparation for Zirconium based crown, Zirconium bases for fixed crown and bridge is a new development in field restoration previously the crown based use was crome-cobolt alloy which was dark black in color and required a lot of opaquer and a thick layer of porcelain was used to match the crown color with adjacent teeth, this require excessive tooth cutting which also require root canal procedure at times.

On the Second day of Pre-Symposium a “Hand-on Workshop on a Traumatic Restoration (ART)” was conducted under the supervision of the subject specialist, Dr Ambrina Qureshi who is also a postgraduate programme supervisor at Dr Isharat-ul-Ebad Khan Institute of oral health sciences, facilitated by Dr Sobia Bilal who is also heading the Department of Community Dentistry in the same Institute. This Workshop was attended by 25 participants from different institute of Karachi working as para-dental staff such as Hygienists and educationists.

The Official Inauguration of 4th Annual Symposium was carried Chairman, Chamber of Commerce & Senior Vice President, Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) S. M. Muneer in the Lecture Hall of Sindh Medical College.

S. M. Muneer speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion said that it is a unique platform that provides opportunities to exchange the knowledge and experience, recent developments, scope of opportunities and innovations. It also serves to help the deserving community. Such types of symposium should be organized on regular intervals.

There is need to develop human resources and improve our standard of health.  He said in my personal experience the dental treatment is the most expensive treatment one can go through. In the countries where all health care facilities are free of cost, dentistry is not provided rather patient has to pay. He was pleased to know that dentistry at this institution is either free of cost or only cost price is charged. I feel proud to see that DUHS has progressed tremendously in very short period under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Masood Hameed Khan.

DUHS has been playing an important role in enhancing professional skills of the medical community and it is really good to see that a large number of medical experts are imparting professional skills and are successfully applying that knowledge in their relevant fields.

He appreciated the untiring efforts of the organizing committee in organizing this learning-full symposium and wished all success in this task which is ahead of them.

Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Masood Hameed Khan in his address highlighted the developments of the University since its inception. He emphasized on the development of human resources and termed it a social responsibility of the University. He said that the University now has fifty institutes training and developing the necessary health personnel to help improve the health facilities in the province as well as the whole country.

The University is also promoting healthcare at very low cost. These kind of symposium helps to upgrade the knowledge and skills. Dow University is interest to collaborate with Mr. Muneer Welfare organization working for the ailing humanity of the country.

Prof. Umer Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor-DUHS & Principal-Sindh Medical College in his remarks these kinds of symposium provides an opportunity to share valuable research.

Prof. Umar Farooq, Principal SMC/ DIKIOHS and Pro-Vice Chancellor DUHS and Patron of the 4th Annual Dental Symposium said that the Dental hospital at DIKIOHS is providing quality treatment at affordable price which actually amounts to the cost price of the services rendered at times even free to have not. Regarding the academic standards he pointed out that DIKIOHS has the distinctions of being among those few Dental Institutions fully recognized by College of Physician & Surgeons in all the clinical disciplines of dentistry.

Other who spoke on the occasion, includes, Dr. Amynah Tariq, Chairperson of the Symposium and Dr. Sobia Bilal Secretary of the Symposium.

The scientific session started by the state of the art lecture delivered by Prof. Mervyn Hosein. He spoke on the theme of Symposium “ Setting Priorities for Oral Health”. Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed Asst. Prof. Orthodontic DIKIOHS presented a paper on appliance fabricated to help clef lip and palate children.

In the end, Mr. S. M. Muneer along with Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Prof. Umer Farooq, Dr. Rana Qamar performed the official inauguration of Trade Exhibition by cutting the ribbon.
