Speakers emphasized on the importance of Ramadan and improving health practices

Speakers at the International Symposium on “Ramadan & Health” emphasized the importance of Ramadan and improving health practice. They stressed that Muslims should fast not feast during the month of Ramadan. They were speaking at Inaugural Ceremony of International Symposium on ‘Ramadan & Health’ organized by Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) at its OJHA Campus.

This Symposium was organised under the supervision of Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, VC, DUHS and Prof. Zaman Shaikh, Director, National Institute of Diabetes & Endocrinology, DUHS. The aim of this conference is to share the research studies conducted by international and national researchers to understand the effect of Ramadan fasting on human health. Several national and international speakers including Prof. Jasem Ramada, Prof Mohsen, Prof Javaid Akram, Prof A.H
Amir, Prof. Zaman Shaikh, Prof. Yaqoob Ahmadani, Prof. Najam-ul-Islam, Prof. Faisal Qureshi, Dr. Khadija and Dr. Shabeen Naz Masood presented their reseach study on the significance of Ramandan on Human Health. They shared their findings on variety of different health related issues during fasting including Ramadan fasting related practices, fasting and feasting in Ramadan, physical activity during Ramadan fasting, management of hypertension and diabetes mellitus during Ramadan fasting, health-related quality of life and many other commonly occurring health issues in relation to Ramadan fasting.

Chairman, Din Group of Companies, S. M. Munir was the Chief Guest whereas Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan was the Guest of Honour of the occasion.

Chief Guest, S. M. Munir speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion said that it is hoped that this symposium is doomed to enlighten the the effect of Ramadan fasting on human health. Through this platform, the scientific evidence toward better health outcomes proceeded by the fasting during the month of Ramadan will be communicated to the larger audience.

Abdul Haseeb Khan in his address said that the benefit of Ramadan which evident from it should not confide to Ramadan but it should be for the whole year. Ramadan benefit is for a better and healthy life. All the diseases are produce by human itself. Ramadan keeps our mind healthy, respective and positive with positive mind think in this world will be free of many diseases.

Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor, DUHS said that this is very important topic because international researchers who performed their research are here to share their findings. He further said that there is considerable evidence to suggest that large sections with Muslim communities experience significant health inequalities although this is not uniform across all Muslim communities or all aspect of health.

It is glad to inform that DUHS has established in Research Department to facilitate the research work on the effect of Ramadan fasting on human health. We are dependent on western countries for research, we need our own research for our own country. DUHS have done research studies specially for Ramadan and is here to share the consequences so that we can help Muslim patients. We hope that in future Muslim would come up very fast as far as research is concerned.

Prof. Zaman Shaikh, Ex Director-NIDE & Chairman, International Conference in his welcome address informed that this symposium is the first of its kind in Pakistan. The purpose of the Symposium is patients care and to share local research to international researchers. He said that during the month of Ramdan patients fast by all means so we can leave them such to we must have some guideline to help our patients. This symposium will provide a valuable forum for our honored guests to present their scholarly endeavors and academic research and to have a dynamic interaction with the members of medical fraternity. This symposium would be cornerstone of the conference as it will focus on detailed aspect of Ramadan fasting on human health. In short, this international symposium promises to showcase a useful blend of academic research, free papers and poster sessions.

Prof. Nazeer Shaikh, Director, Research Department, DUHS informed about the research studies conducted by Dow University two years back. He informed that there are number of Muslim countries who are conducting research and holding symposium on Ramadan which includes Morroco, Turkey and Malaysia. He informed that in Pakistan, no clinical studies have been conducted previously except few studies from DUHS faculty members.

Pre-Symposium Workshop

Pre-Symposium Workshop was arranged at Ojha Campus for doctors and para-medical staff aims to give awareness about the usage of Insulin.

In the first session of Pre-Symposium Workshop, Dr. Zaman Shaikh, Ex Director, National Institute of Diabetes & Endocrinology (NIDE), DUHS and Dr. Farid Uddin, Deputy Director National Institute of Diabetes & Endocrinology (NIDE), DUHS spoke on Insulin therapy. They said that in the past, diabetes patients do not fast during Ramadan but now the Diabetes patients after training can fast during Ramadan. Insulin increase glucose uptake particularly in muscle, live and adipose tissue. The insulin therapy aims to replicate the normal physiological insulin response. There are many misconceptions about insulin therapy in diabetes. He said that insulin is essential not only for health of diabetes, but it is needed to save life of so many diabetics especially for persons with type 1 diabetes. He stressed that much awareness is needed for the proper and accurate use of insulin. He highlighted new advancements in insulin therapy and said that new needles used nowadays to inject insulin are virtually painless.

In the second session, Dr. Nazeer Shaikh, Director, Research Department, DUHS, Dr. Abdul Rasheed & Mehwish Hussain will speak on Bio-Statistic Techniques. They said that the aim objective of the Workshop was to enhance the concept of statistical tools used in health sciences with their application.
