Sehat sahulat program – KP launches health insurance scheme

The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa envisions a progressive movement towards a universal healthcare coverage model for all citizens, in which the needs of the poorest are specifically protected by the government, and the availability and quality of essential services is ensured. The ”SEHAT SAHULAT PROGRAMME” is being launched in the province with the financial support of German government through KfW. The programme will run for five years with a total cost of Rs. 1,399.156 million.

Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khan Khattak launched the Sehat Sahulat Programme, a Social Health Protection Scheme in the province recently at a local hotel in Peshawar. Shahram Khan Tarakai, Minister for Health Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, German Ambassador Ms. Ina Lepel, KfW Director Wolfgang Moellers and Chairperson of the Sate Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan, Ms. Nargis Ghaloo attended the Ceremony.

The goal of the programme is to improve the health status of the targeted population through increasing access to quality health services.  In addition it is expected to help reduce poverty through the reduction of out of pocket payments for health expenditures.

To implement this programme, State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan is selected through national competitive bidding. State Life has initiated the  enrollment of eligible beneficiaries for the program. Both public and private healthcare providers have been empanelled for provision of health care services.  The program provides a cashless service for the beneficiaries, as the service providers will be reimbursed directly by the insurance company. A comprehensive awareness campaign at the grassroots level will help reinforce the benefits of the programme.

The program is essentially a health insurance programme which offers hospitalization coverage of Rs. 25,000 per family member per annum. The premium per family per year is Rs. 1,700 which will be paid by the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the financial support of the German Government.

The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has selected the districts of Mardan, Malakand, Chitral and Kohat for this scheme. However the programme will be rolled out to other districts of the province in phased manner.
