Research complex named after German scholar opened

Prof. Wolfgang Voelter Laboratories Complex, setup at a cost of Rs.85 millions, was inaugurated at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) on Thursday.

German Ambassador Her Excellency Ms. Ina Lepel opened the laboratories complex by uncovering the curtains of plaque of the new building. The newly setup laboratories complex, which is named after Pakistan-friendly German scientist Prof. Wolfgang Voelter, is a 3-storeyed building comprising of 50,000 sq feet laboratory space.

Later on, the German ambassador delivered an inaugural lecture in the opening ceremony held at Salimuzzaman Siddiqui Auditorium, ICCBS, University of Karachi.

In the ceremony, ex-Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Chancellor University of Petra Prof. Dr. Adnan Badran, Secretary to Sindh Chief Minister Dr. Iqbal Hussain Durrani, Vice Chancellor University of Karachi Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser, former Federal Minister for Science and Technology and former Chairman Higher Education Commission Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Director ICCBS Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, Chairperson Dr. Punjwani Memorial Trust Nadira Panjwani, Saman Aziz Jamal of H.E.J. Foundation and President Hamdard Foundation Pakistan Ms. Sadia Rashid also expressed their views. Leading national and international scientists, students and dignitaries, including Hussain Aziz Jamal of H.E.J. Foundation, attended the ceremony.

Addressing the ceremony, the German ambassador said that Germany and Pakistan had strong bilateral educational and cultural relations. She maintained that during the last few years around 90 German students and researchers had got training at the ICCBS, UoK. A large number of Pakistanis visit Germany to be enrolled in various educational and scientific degree programs. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser said that Prof. Wolfgang Voelter had played significant role in term of supporting science in Pakistan, and financially assisting in creation of the world class research institution in the University campus. His great services will ever be remembered in Pakistan, he resolved.

Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman paid tribute to the German scholar, and said that Prof. Voelter was a great supporter of Pakistan. The great German scientist is like a role model not only for Pakistani students but also for scientists.

Dr. Iqbal Hussain Durrani said that it was a kind of tribute paid to the German scientist in recognition of his monumental contributions and services for the development of the ICCBS, and services in general in Pakistan.

Former Jordanian prime minister appreciated the administration of the international centre for creating such a state-of-the-art research complex, and appreciated the presence of modern research and educational institutions like ICCBS in Pakistan.
