Pakistan Society of ENT Surgeons honors Country’s first PhD in ENT

Prof. Dr. Iqbal Khayani achieved Gold Medal for being first PhD in ENT in Pakistan awarded to him by Pakistan Society of ENT in 27th National ENT Conference Dec 2017; he is Prof. of ENT at Dow Medical College of Dow University of Health Sciences, Civil Hospital Karachi. Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Iqbal Khayani was conferred PhD degree on his original study Thesis titled “A-Clinico-Pathological co-relative Study on Oral Pre- Neoplasia and Oral Cancer with detection of early bio-markers HPV-16 and 18, IL6 and IL8 in Saliva”. He has the honor of being first PhD in Pakistan in the field of ear, nose, throat and head and neck surgery. He did this research in our country because oral concerns is at the rise and alarming numbers of cancers are detected in younger age group due to increasing use of betel nut (Chalia), betel quid (Paan, Gutka, Mawa, Manpuri). Majority of our patient presents late at advance stage for the diagnosis and treatment due to misconception and fear of being biopsied.

Prof. Dr. Iqbal Khayani is a medical graduate from Dow Medical College, a premier medical institute of Pakistan, in 1988. He did his minor diploma in Ear, Nose and Throat (D.L.O) from University of Karachi in 1992. He did fellowship in Ear, Nose, Throat, and Head & Neck Surgery (FCPS) from College of Physicians and Surgeons, in March 2000 and fellowship in Otorhinolaryngology (FRCS) from Royal College of Surgeons.

He had special training abroad in ear surgery (Otology) especially cochlear implant, Head & Neck Surgery especially for cancer surgery and functional Endoscopic approach for chronic rhino sinusitis and nasal polyps. He attended more than 70 national and international conferences, symposia, workshops and CMEs of international standard in temporal bone workshop, first ever of its kind in Pakistan. He has got more than 50 publications to his credit including Editorials, Event reports, Personal communications, Review articles, Original articles. He contributed at different positions in the Pakistan Journal of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (PJORL). Presently he is the Associate editor in PJORL since 2010. He is on the panel of reviewers in many national and international journals and contributed in three books on medical topics.
