Organ donation and transplantation is a service to humanity – Speakers

A one-day Seminar on “organ donation and transplantation in the light of Quran and Sunnah” was organized by Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre (SZIC) University of Karachi (KU) in collaboration with Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) was held at the auditorium of the SZIC- KU. The Seminar was presided over by Prof. Mufti Munib ur Rehman (Chairman Markazi Royat-e-Hilal Committee Pakistan) whereas Maulana Muhammad Khan Sheerani (Chairman Islamic Ideology Council Pakistan) was the chief guest. In this event national as well as international renowned Ulema and religious scholars threw light on the Shariah/religious aspects of this crucial topic.

Prof. Dr. Noor Ahmed Shahtaz, Director SZIC in his welcome address informed that SZIC is trying to develop a mutual consensus on this very important issue and today’s event was one of the steps in this connection.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Mufti Saleem, G.C University Faisalabad said that if a person suffering from organ failure can benefit from organ transplantation which help save his life and improves its quality, then what better service to humanity. Prominent religious scholar Dr. Mohsin Naqvi, Ex-Dean SZABIST and visiting professor Harvard University stressed upon the fact that organ donation and transplantation is neither mutilating nor disrespectful to humanity rather it is the most ultimate and supreme form of token of respect for humanity.

Mufti M. Siddique Hazarwi, Ex-member Islamic Ideology Council Pakistan and Sheikh ul Hadees Jamia Hajweri Lahore said that the issue of organ donation and transplantation needs to be addressed to and sorted out by the Ulema by sitting together and having mutual dialogues and discussions. Allama Baqar Zaidi said that due to the tremendous and rapid progress in the field of medicine, it is imperative that the process of organ donation and transplantation needs to be fully supported as it is the need of the times.

Mufti Muhammad Ibrahim, Member Islamic Ideology Council and Administrator Ghausia Madrassah Sukkur explained to the gathering that Islam is a religion of ease and relaxation thus if any deserving patient requires the need of an organ and its transplantation to sustain his life, it is permissible in Islamic Shariat.

President Jamiat-e-Ulema Pakistan, President Millat e Yakjehti council and Ex MNA, Dr. Abu al Khair Muhammad Zubair said that well being of humanity has been the foremost Sunnat of our Prophets and there can be no greater and nobler deed then helping to save lives of fellow human beings.

Maulana M. Khan Sheerani, Ex- Minister for religious affairs and Chairman Islamic Ideology Council Pakistan said that Islam not only permits organ donation and transplantation for Muslims but for the non Muslim also. He divulged the fact that Islamic Ideology Council of Pakistan has already put up a request in 1983-84 for proper legislation on the matter of organ donation and transplantation.

Allama Syed Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi on this occasion expressed his views that saving human life, providing opportunity for sustenance of life and service to humanity are the noble deeds that are most favoured in Islam.

Maulana Mufti Hammad ur Rehman Ludhianvi said that it has been ordered in Holy Quran to ensure equality and justice in the society. The society should discourage the act of organ trading so that the organs are equally available for both the rich and the poor patients. He added that the Ulemas totally abhor this heinous business of organ selling and buying.

Maulana Muhammad Saquibudin highly lauded and appreciated the efforts to arrange such an event. Dr. Ikram ul Haq Secretary, Islamic Ideology Council Pakistan stated that the integrity and honour of human beings should always be put first before anything else.

The major feature of the seminar was showing a live video conference amongst Dr. Adib Rizvi Director SIUT and transplant experts from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. World renowned kidney specialist Dr. Faisal Shaheen from Saudi Arabia said that the Islamic scholars had released Fatawah permitting deceased organ donation and organ transplantation which since then has been carried out for the past 24 years.

Earlier Dr. Mustafa Al-Mousawi transplant specialist from Kuwait said that the role of Ulema has been of pivotal and of paramount importance for the success of deceased organ donation and transplantation process in the country.

Later on, Prof. Dr. Zahoor Ahmed Azhar, Mufti Muhammad Zubair, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sajjad, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zia ul Haq, Mufti Zameer Ahmed Sajid also addressed the audience.
