Need to raise awareness about breast cancer – Prof. Dr. Rufina

To mark International Breast Cancer Month, ICI Pakistan Ltd. in collaboration with Usman Memorial Hospital (UMH) organised a seminar on “Breast Cancer- Early Diagnosis” recently at Usman Memorial Hospital, Karachi.

Prof. Dr. Rufina Soomro, Breast Cancer Specialist from Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) Karachi briefed the participants about the alarming situation caused by breast cancer amongst women in Pakistan. She said that one out of nine women is likely to be at the risk of Breast Cancer in Pakistan. Over 30 percent of women in the country have Breast Cancer but despite this, most of the women are generally unaware of the disease.

She further said that Breast Cancer is on the rise in developing countries and the mortality rate is higher in Asia. Breast cancer is curable in early stages if detected early.

Approximately, 20 percent women die of it in Pakistan with five percent from other causes. Cases of Breast Cancer in urban and rural areas are 68 percent and 32 percent respectively.

The rate of survival after treatment is 85 percent after 5 years of age, 71 percent after 10 years of age, 57 percent after 15 years of age and 52 percent after 20 years of age,” she added.

In India, there are 27 new cases out of 100 per year while in Pakistan, the number is higher i.e. 69 new cases out of 100 per year. 

Dr. Raza Saeed Abbas, Medical Affairs Manager, Life Sciences Business, ICI Pakistan Ltd. on the occasion said that Breast cancer is among the most common cancer countrywide. Breast cancer is curable in early stages if detected early, therefore there is a general need for Public awareness not only for Breast Cancer but awareness of overall Health and related diseases. ICI Pakistan, Life Sciences is running similar awareness sessions on Breast Cancer during the whole month. ICI Life Sciences in collaboration with Usman Memorial Hospital, organized initial Breast Cancer screening by conducting physical examinations for female participants of the seminar after the presentations.

Ms. Fouzia Ganatra sharing her views said that Breast Cancer mortality rate is increasing day by day. Women less than 30 year have the maximum chances of having breast cancer.

Effective treatment of breast cancer is possible if detected early. A lot of women could be saved from complications if the disease is diagnosed at initial stage, she added.

Awareness of this disease was the need of the hour, and the people should cooperate with to raise awareness in the masses.
