Need for Paediatric Urology and Nephrology discussed

Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) organized at two-day 2nd International Paediatric Nephrology Workshop recently at SIUT Karachi. Prof. Adibul Hasan Rizvi, Director, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Prof. Bassam Saeed of Syria, Prof. Mathias Brandis of Germany, Prof. Frank Delmonico of USA and Prof. Chula Goonasekra of Sri Lanka jointly inaugurated the conference. The conference was attended by world-renowned paediatric nephrologists, transplant surgeons and anaesthetist from Germany, Syria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the United States. A good number of post graduate trainee doctors are attending this conference. This conference will be of great help for them to gain knowledge for better management for their sick paediatric patients.

Prof. Adibul Hasan Rizvi in welcomed addressed briefed the participant about the history and evolution of SIUT. He discussed the need for Paediatric Urology and Nephrology because he said little kids are always missed or ignored if they are not seen separately. He stressed the need for coordinated renal services including urology, nephrology and transplantation.

The inaugural session was also addressed by Dr Nasir Luck, Dr Ali Asghar Lanewala, and Dr Seema Hashmi.

On the second day of “2nd International Paediatric Nephrology Conference” a public awareness symposium for treatment and prevention of kidney diseases in children was organized. World known Paediatric Nephrologist and Transplant Surgeons Prof. Bassam Saeed of Syria, Prof. Chula Goonasekra of Sri Lanka, Prof. Nosha Baqi of USA, Prof. Mathias Brandis of Germany, Prof. William Hormen of USA, from Pakistan Prof. Adibul Hasan Rizvi, Dr. Ali Asghar Lanewala and Dr. Seema Hashmi were the panelists. They responded to the question asked for prevention and treatment of kidney diseases. Prof. A. Naqvi was coordinator of this session.

General Consensus was that early diagnosis is equal to prevention. This conference was attended by a large number of post graduate doctors who were given latest knowledge of kidney diseases and now they will be able to diagnose and start proper treatment of their patient very early and patient can be saved from kidney failure. For kidney stone formers it is advised to increase water intake to avoid stone diseases. It is well known fact that if we increase proteins in diet of children, they can be saved from bladder stones.

Acute renal failure is common in children suffering from diarrhea so if we provide our children boiled, clean drinking water they could be saved from diarrhea and consequently from acute renal failure.

Children having body swelling and dark urine should immediately consult paediatrician because they may be suffering from infectious glomerulonephritis. Early detection is important to prevent future complication.

If a child is suffering from fever, vomiting and lumber pain, and child may be suffering from kidney infection. Early treatment can save child from deadly complications. Infection is associated with constipation, poor hygiene and decreased fluid intake.

Children with reduced growth may be suffering from chronic kidney disease such children should consult their paediatrician.Intake of tea, cola drinks, and chocolate can give rise to stone disease. By giving up intake of these rich oxalate sources stone disease could be reduced.

The conference recommended that more paediatric nephrology units should be opened across the country to save the children from kidney diseases.
