National Steering Committee Meeting on Safe Blood Transfusion Services in Pakistan

National Blood Transfusion Programme (NBTP) arranged 3rd Meeting of National Steering Committee (NSC) on ‘Safe Blood Transfusion Services in Pakistan’ recently at a local hotel in Islamabad.

National Programme Manager, NBTP, Dr. Hasan A. Zaheer informed the participants of the meeting about the legislations on Safe Blood Transfusion. He said that the existing legislations on Safe Blood Transfusion have been revised and a consensus draft of Blood Transfusion law has been prepared to ensure uniformity in transfusion practices across the country. The federal law document has been submitted to Ministry of Health (MoH) for review and subsequent submission to the Law Ministry.

Reviewing the updates from National Steering Committee Task Forces, NPM emphasized that all members should work actively for the Task Force and the electronic communication should be encouraged for coordination whereas the nomination of members for the new task forces on voluntary blood donation and Clinical Rational use of blood will be launched soon. He also emphasized to work pro-actively in the activation of provincial steering committees.

He also informed the participants about the collaborations with the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) through the Technical Assistance Team and termed these collaborations very important for Voluntary Non-Remunerated Blood Donation (VNRBD) and for capacity building needs in transfusion medicine.

Paul Kohorst, Team Leader, GTZ TA Team informed the participants about the meetings with WHO blood safety programme  officer and the recent grant for the blood safety sector in Pakistan by WHO.

Talking about the Research in Transfusion Medicine, NPM emphasized on the research study proposals in Pakistan which can then be presented in international conferences. He mentioned the participation and presentation of country report in Arab Transfusion Medicine Course (ATMC-4) at Cairo in first week of December.

Dr. Zainab Sangji, Technical Expert, GTZ TA Team briefed the participants about the Task Force activities. She assured full support by providing assistance to the provinces in the regulatory framework aspects and other necessary points needing the technical assistance.

Usman Waheed, Technical Advisor, GTZ TA Team said that the task force-1 is working on the revision of the national guidelines and standards and therefore need full support from all members of the task force. He also briefed the participants about the registration process of Pakistan Society of Blood Transfusion.

Dr. Sarfraz Jaffri, Project Director, Husaini Blood Bank informed about the support they are providing to DUHS for their practical trainings and offered full support to NBTP for their workshops and trainings.

Earlier, the Provincial Managers including Dr. Zahid Hasan Ansari of Sindh, Dr. Sher Zaman of Balochistan, and Dr. Abdul Latif of Gilgit Baltistan gave brief outline of the PC-1 progress in their provinces.
