Media urged to raise awareness about TB

To highlight the crucial role of media in eradi cating TB from the country, National TB Control Program (NTP) in collaboration with Provincial TB Control Program Sindh (PTP) arranged an Advocacy Seminar with Key Stakeholders & Media on “Fighting TB Together” at a local hotel in Karachi.

Dr. Shahd Hanif, Deputy Program Manager, National TB Control Program as a chief guest on the occasion said that TB is a fast emerging disease in the country. Pakistan ranked 8th among the 22 countries considered highly affected by TB.

It is observed that about 300,000 new cases of tuberculosis developed in the country every year. Early detection of TB patients and quality treatment give  good results.

TB is number sixth in leading causes of death. Pakistan has declared TB as

a global emergence in 2001. In Pakistan all public health sectors are providing free of cost treatment to TB patients whereas capacity building and free treatment is also given. Presently there are more  than 1100 RHCs that are declared as diagnostic centres whereas 5,000 treatment centre are providing free of cost treatment of TB sufferers.

Eight months of complete treatment helps to discard the disease. We have directed our community health workers who are responsible to take care of the patients. Patients should avail the facilities provided by these centres.

Later on, he urged the media to come forward  regarding TB. Media has an important role to disseminate TB knowledge, attitude and practices across the country.

Dr. A. K. Jamali, Regional Project Manager, Bridge Consultants Foundation through his presentation briefed the participants about the objectives of the Foundation.    He further said “we are creating awareness among masses in our community from grass-root level that TB is a curable disease.”

He urged the infected peoples to come forward and get proper treatment from our diagnostic and treatment centres and get rid from this deadliest disease.

We also have the co-ordination mechanism with district heath departments

at provincial and district level. We hold Inter-District Meeting quarterly to update district wise data. We hold frequent meetings with PTP managers and official of TB DOT Control Program.

We have adopted monitoring and evaluation mechanism which include various methods like supervision of field offices, communication with community mobilizers, feedback from EDOs etc. We hold monthly meeting with community mobilizers to discuss and review the progress and content of the programs.

Media personal have a very important role to play in this effort. Orientation session with media personnel were arranged and were then urged that they should write more and more about TB.

Dr. Usman briefed the audience about their project. He said that they have been working on a project of providing lectures among school children from grade 5 and above.

We motivate school children to give messages to their classmates, homes and com-

munity. Female school was most targeted as compared to male school. This project aims to enhance the case deduction and treatment success rate and targeted communities and areas.

We are operating one of the largest school network in Pakistan and that is why this program was integrated. The objectives of the project is to reach 25,000 school children in 10 districts across Pakistan and to deliver TB awareness lectures in 50 schools.

Furthermore, calendars, posters and leaflets were also distributed to spread

the message. Posters exhibition were also arranged where best posters winning prizes were also distributed.  Dr. Nazar from Mercy Corp through his presentation highlighted the role of Mercy Corp.
