Immense need stressed to expand services in the field of Gynaecology

The 2nd National Symposium of Obstetrics & Gynaecology held at Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) recently at Karachi was meant to dissipate the latest knowledge and information about “Evolving New Trends in Women’s Health”, the theme of the symposium.

Symposia, workshop, seminars etc play a vital role in imparting necessary knowledge to the concerned doctors. It is very difficult for a busy doctor to remain abreast of all the latest knowledge as it expansion in the field of medicine is extremely rapid and vast.

During this 3-day symposium, there were five pre-symposium Workshops with very important topics including Assisted Reproductive Techniques, Obstetric Fistula Repair, Evaluation of Breast Disease, A Gynecologist Prospective and Gynaecological Oncology.

  The Inaugural Ceremony of the 2nd National Symposium of Obstetrics & Gynecology was held with speeches delivered by Chairperson of the Symposium Prof. Dr. Haleema Hashmi, Patron–in-Chief Dr. Khusro-Sultana, Convener Symposium and the backbone of the program Dr. Shagufta Tahir presented keynote speech of the three day event.

Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Sadiqua Jaffarey expressed her gratitude and thoughts regarding the need for such activities in the country. Prof. Dr. Rashid Latif Khan was the guest of honor on this occasion; he attended the first National program 2 years ago when he was invited as Chief Guest. He extended warm wishes for the success of symposium and congratulated organizers of the symposium who exerted effort to arrange this mega event second time in Liaquat National Auditorium. He added that such activities are the best method of imparting knowledge to younger generation of doctors and nurses. Since Nursing School of Liaquat National Hospital was very much active and attended inaugural ceremony with enthusiasm. Dr. Rashid Latif wished to come at LNH symposium again and again.

Liaquat National Hospital’s Medical Director appreciated the efforts of organizers and  wished well to the chief guest, Guest of Honor and  professors from various institutes. Liaquat National Medical College Principal and Dean Faculty Prof. Dr. Amir Ali Shoro extended his warm wishes for the success of symposium, congratulated organizers to all participants who traveled from various parts of the country. This ceremony was followed by drama cum classical dance by Ms. Shima Kirmani conveying the mes-sage about vulnerability of women in our male dominated society. 

Two state-of-the-art lecturers by renowned and senior gynaecologists of the country Prof. Dr. Sadiqua Jaffarey enlightened the audience by the current situation of women’s health in Pakistan”. Prof. Dr. Farukh Zaman discussed the changing trends the  world over in improving women’s health.

The first scientific session was on “ART”. The lectures were delivered by authoritative personalities. Prof. Dr.Rashid Latif talked about the present, past and future of Assisted Reproductive Technique as sub specialty in gynecology. Dr. Shaheen Zafar, Dr. Salma Batool shared their experience with audience. Prof. Dr. Sirajul-dualla presented a lecture in pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. In the concluding remarks the speakers stressed upon the need to expand the service in the field.

 On the second day of the symposium, lectures on “Urogynaecology” were delivered by leading consultants of the field. The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Aftab Munir, the invited speakers Prof. Dr. Pushpa SiriChand, Dr. Aziz Abdullah consultant urologist stressed upon the need to look into the causes of increased  Prevalence of iatrogenic urinary fistula due to increased incidence of hysterectomies over all and under trained surgeons. Later, in the evening banquet with musical program was arranged for recreation. The attendance was almost 100 per cent and every one enjoyed the event.

On the third day of the symposium, first session was of “Gynaecological Onco-logy”. Almost all aspects of the topic were covered from premalignant cancer state to chemo and radiotherapy of advance malignancy. The experience at LNH was presented by Assistant Prof Dr. Shagufta Tahir, Dr. Rufina Soomro consultant general Surgeon at LNH thanked the opportunity provided to her to discuss the importance of gynecologist force to help in early detection & referral to the tertiary care center for breast lump evaluation and regular self exami-nation encouragement & teaching for public awareness. Prof. Dr. Haleema Hashmi Head of Department of Gynecology at LNH, delivered a lecture on very pertinent issue of endometrial cancer in young girls of poly cystic disease, stressed upon the early diagnosis & management can save many lives.   

The last session was on “Operative Gynaecology”. It was chaired by Prof. Dr. Arshad Chohan, who delivered an elaborated talk on a social problem of young girls in society who present with primary ammenorrohea, mainly he discussed the operative part of the disease. Prof. Muhammad Tayyab talked about the current concept in the management of PCO. Prof. Dr. Turab Pishori general surgeon at LNMC discussed about a silently afflicting disease causing women’s life miserable, fecal incontinence in female, he talked about the methods of repair. On all three days of symposium, there were free paper presentations by medical students and gynaecologists.
