IIU organizes seminar to mark the World Blood Donor Day

The Department of Environmental Sciences, International Islamic University,Islamabadorganized a seminar in collaboration with National Blood Transfusion Programme to mark the start of weeklong celebrations of the World Blood Donor Day 2012. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Hasan Abbas Zaheer, Project Director, National Blood Transfusion Programme gave an overview of the World Blood Donor Day and the rationale behind this event. The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign, “Every blood donor is a hero” focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. He also shared the progress of the project which is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the achievements made by the Programme to promote the cause of blood safety.

 

Dr. Bashir Ahmad from International Islamic University highlighted the Islamic concept of blood donation. Mr. Usman Waheed, Technical Advisor, GIZ SBT Project elaborated the types of blood donations with a global and national scenario of the blood donation. Dr. Sadaf Sardar, Joint Director, Pakistan Red Crescent Society, gave a strategic overview of the PRCS role in donor motivation sand mobilization. Dr. Uzma Anjum, Technical Expert GIZ SBT Project discussed the model of Club 25 withPakistan’s perspective. During the seminar, a stage drama was performed by the students of Shifa College of Medicine, Shifa International Hospital.,Islamabad.  The stage drama highlighted the fear, myths and misconceptions regarding blood donation. Dr. Sadaf Sardar, from Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) elaborated the role of PRCS in promoting voluntary blood donation.

 

Dr. Asma Gul, Chairperson Department of Environmental Sciences, Female Campus, lauded the project team for conducting the seminar on such an important topic. Students and senior faculty members of International Islamic University (IIU) including Dr. Arshad Malik, Ms. Sara Amir, Ms. Rizwana, Dr. Naveeda Riaz, Dr. Shaheen, Dr. Asad Ghufran, Dr. Jabir Khattak, and Dr. Ibrar Shinwari actively participated in the event.  Overall, this event proved that youth has the potential to become a driving force behind motivation for blood donation.
