ICI Pakistan arranged breast cancer awareness program at NIMRA

To create awareness among the female community of the region, Nuclear Institute of Medicine & Radiotherapy (NIMRA) Jamshoro organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Program recently at NIMRA Jamshoro. A large number of participants including breast surgeons, lady health workers and female staff of Sindh University attended the awareness program.

Ms. Touqeer Fatima Bhutto, Provincial Minister for Women Development speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion appreciated the efforts of NIMRA for organizing awareness programs for female community and stressed on the health workers to disseminate these program up to the rural level to diagnose the Breast Cancer in early stage. She also announced donation of an Ambulance for this Institute.

She assured that her Ministry would extend full co-operation for establishment of such centres in rural areas of the province and for that she would approach the concerned quarters for allocation of needed grants.

Prof. Dr. Noshad Ahmed Shaikh, Vice Chancellor Liaquat University of Health Sciences (LUMHS) said that breast cancer is the leading problem among the women and there is need of taking effective initiatives in controlling the breast cancer.

Prof. Dr. Noshad Ahmed Shaikh and Prof. Aftab Munir Siddiqui, Consultant Gynaecologist, Isra University highly appreciated this Breast Awareness program and stressed to hold such programs in future.

Dr. Naeem Ahmed Laghari, Director NIMRA in his welcome address mentioned that breast cancer is the most common cancer in females in our country. In Pakistan 90,000 women are affected by Breast Cancer annually, only 10% are diagnosed and out of them 75% women do not treated and die within five years. The Breast Cancer Awareness is a joint venture and we all have to play our role by joining hands to fight against the Cancer. If it is diagnosed at an early stage, the management is very effective and 100% cure of the disease is possible, thanks to recent advance research which made possible for more females than ever to hear these reassuring words of cure.

Earlier, Amir Naveed Shaikh, Business Unit Head, ICI Pakistan Ltd. speaking on the occasion said that ICI Pakistan is the only philanthropic organisation spending major chunk of its profit for providing needed facilities at cancer treatment centres.

In the end the participants visited the Breast Care Clinic, Mobile Mammography Unit, Dr. Aisha Siddiqua, Senior Medical Officer briefed about Breast Screening.
