Nursing Education in Pakistan has remained ignored in the country since last couple of years. Presently only 14 Nursing Institutes in the country are offering graduate and undergraduate programs with a total annual enrollment of about 700 students. All the other nursing schools are offering three years Diploma after Matriculation.

The doctor/nurse ratio in Pakistan is 3:1, but according to WHO estimates the recommended ratio is 1:3. The total registered nurses according to Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) in Pakistan are 52,960; whereas the total registered doctors by Pakistan Medical & Dental Centre (PMDC) in Pakistan are 121374.

In Pakistan, healthcare system is becoming sophisticated with latest developments in the medical fields. Highly qualified and skilled nurses are required to meet the challenges of modern times. Standard of healthcare in any health facility can not be improved without enhancing the skills of Nurses.  

The Institute of Nursing of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) aims to become the Center of Research and Academic Excellence by preparing leaders in the field of Nursing and by producing sufficient number of highly skilled and trained nursing professionals which can meet the challenges of modern preventive and curative healthcare.

The Institute of Nursing of Dow University of Health Sciences was established in the year 2006 with the support of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan with the approved cost of Rs.182.077 million. Prof. Atta-Ur-Rehman, Chairman, Higher Education Commission Pakistan performed foundation laying ceremony of Nursing Institute and Hostel Building. 

After the establishment two years Post RN B.Sc Nursing Program classes was started in April 2006 in renovated building of paramedical institute. Whereas 50 students admitted on merit basis after inviting applications from eligible students and written Entry Test.

The Institute is committed to promote Nursing Education in Pakistan and to enhance Nursing image by empowering nurses through higher education, research and skill building.

The vision of Institute of Nursing DUHS is to produce highly skilled nurses by offering Bachelors, Masters and PhD Programs and improving professional skills of nurses through theoretical  and practical training courses. Thus improving quality healthcare facilities by decreasing acute shortage of qualified and skilled nurses in the country.

The collaborations with National and International research institutions helps to promote research in the field of nursing through trainings, research grants and research.

Institute of Nursing has six well equipped class rooms along with six tutorial rooms for small group teaching. It also has state-of-art  laboratory with simulators, dummies and models. The Science labs, Computer lab, Digital Library with high Speed Internet, Research lab, Conference Hall, Faculty rooms have infrastructure to provide better education.

The courses offered include: Introduction to Clinical Pharmacology for Nurses of 14 Weeks; Infection Control in Health Care Setting of 14 Weeks; Midwifery Master Trainers/Faculty Development Program; Diploma in Community Midwifery (Three Semesters).
