The Department of Research, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) organized Fourth Faculty Research Day today at Dow Medical College, Karachi. Prof. Dr. Irshad Waheed, Principal, Jinnah Medical and Dental College, Karachi was the chief guest whereas Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor and Prof. Dr. M. Umer Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DUHS was the guest on honor of the occasion. It was attended by a large number of senior faculty members as well as students.
The faculty research day aimed to showcase the research in posters presentations being conducted by the faculty members of DUHS and to serve as a forum for interaction among faculty members. Fifty Nine presentations were presented focusing on research on different diseases were conducted during the year 2011-12.
Prof. Dr. Irshad Waheed speaking on the occasion said that there is need to provide platform to enhance research activities in developing countries. He stressed on to other medical universities to facilitate research work of their students and faculty members.
Talking about the ethics in medical research, he said that it is very important and it should be followed properly. Medical research being done has to strictly follow the medical ethics as sanctioned in the declarations. In all cases, the research ethics has to be respected. There is need to consider ethics in research.
It is pleased to know that Dow University is providing research grants to the students and faculty members to do research. He congratulated Prof. Masood Hameed Khan and Research Department of regularly holding research activities.
Prof. Masood Hameed Khan in his remarks said that said that the motivation to observer faculty research day is to enhance the enthusiasm towards performance of quality researches. The purpose of research is the creation of knowledge. Dow University is providing platform for research activities and it is the duty of young scientist to take it at highest level. Currently, Dow University has 32 PhDs and the number of research papers has increased. He further said that the vision of the DUHS is to create knowledge. In the recent years, the most research works were stopped due to non-availability of funding.
Prof. Dr. M. Umer Farooq said that different institution are recognized by their research work and here at Dow University, we have allocated special funds for research activities. He also congratulated the winner of today faculty research day.
Prof. Junaid Ashraf, Principal Dow Medical College gave a brief overview of postgraduate scenario in medical universities. He said that Dow University is the first medical university to start semester system. At Dow University, most of the academic programs are research based.
Prof. Nazeer Khan, Director, Department of Research, DUHS gave a brief over of books being published by the faculty members of the university.
In the end, the shields for the best poster presentation were awarded to Dr. Ehmer Al Abrar of DUHS, Ms. Afsheen Arif of University of Karachi and Dr. Masood Javaid of DUHS respectively. Later on shields were presented to the authors of the Books.
