DIABETES IS INCREASING AT ALARMING RATE IN PAKISTAN

Diabetes in Pakistan is increasing at an alarming rate. Number of pregnant women in Pakistan suffering from diabetes is considerably higher as compared to other countries, these views were expressed by experts at a Press Briefing and Inauguration Ceremony of 4th International Diabetes Conference held recently.

The conference was organized by Sanofi and the Diabetic Association of Pakistan (DAP) in Islamabad and Lahore aimed to bring to Pakistan’s renowned international diabetes experts from globally recognized centres of academic excellence to address the Conference.
The diabetes experts Sir Michael Hirst- Past President International Diabetes Federation, Peter Schwarz- Professor of Medicine Prevention and diabetes care University of Dresden, Nam Cho- President Elect International Diabetes Federation, RüdigerLandgraf- Prof. of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetology at the University of Munich & Co-Chairman German Diabetes Foundation travelled to Pakistan for speaking at the conference. Secretary General of the Diabetic Association of Pakistan and Honorary President International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Prof. A. SamadShera graced the occasion from Pakistan.
Prof. A Samad Shera, secretary general of the Diabetic Association of Pakistan and honorary president International Diabetes Federation (IDF), said key to success in fighting diabetes is awareness. Fast food and soda beverages are weapons of mass destruction. He stressed the need for healthier lifestyle and regular screening for diabetes, particularly for those at high risk.

Prof. Peter Schwarz advised a ten thousand step daily walk for everyone. He claimed that a person starting a walk of 10,000 steps daily at the age of 22 will never get a chronic disease.
Sanofi Pakistan Director External Affairs Laila Khan said that at Sanofi we strive to improve the lives of people with diabetes by guiding them to manage their conditions well and live a healthy life.

Sir Michael Hirst, Former President International Diabetes Federation; Nam Cho, president-elect International Diabetes Federation; Rüdiger Landgraf, professor of Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetology at the University of Munich and co-chairman German Diabetes Foundation also spoke on the occasion.
