ASCP Board of Certification in Pakistan

Clinical laboratories represent an area of healthcare that has undergone great deal of improvement since its beginning centuries ago. With over 475,000 individuals certified, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the largest association of laboratory professionals in the world. Serving as the largest and oldest pathology and laboratory medicine society, the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) now offers a formal process for international laboratory professionals to earn ASCPi. Founded in 1928 by ASCP, the Board of Certification is widely accepted as the most influential leader in the field of certification of medical laboratory professionals. The ASCP Board of Certification is an administratively independent certification agency that prepares relevant standards and develops procedures that will assure the competence of non-physician medical laboratory personnel. The ASCP Board of Certification certifies those individuals who meet the academic and clinical prerequisites and who achieve acceptable performance levels on examinations. ASCP certification demonstrates that that your knowledge and experience meet the highest standards of your profession. Certifications can be awarded in Molecular Biology, Gynaecologic Cytology, Blood Banking, Phlebotomy, Microbiology, Cytotechnology and Chemistry.

Laboratory sciences has now become the most appealing profession in Pakistan and lab professionals are striving for new quality horizons. There is, however, a wide diversity in the standard of the institutes and no regulatory or accreditation system. ASCP got multiple applications from Pakistan for certification in different disciplines. Due to the difference in pre-requisite academic eligibility criteria, ASCP established an Advisory Board of Certification in Pakistan. The appointed members represent different territorial units of the country and have immense experience of teaching and training in laboratory sciences. The BOC Advisory Board members are Prof. Hasan Abbas Zaheer, (Project Director Safe Blood Transfusion Programme, Government of Pakistan), Prof. Haroon Khan (Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences), Mr. Usman Waheed (Technical Advisor, Safe Blood Transfusion Programme, Pakistan), Mr. Asim Ansari (Manager Pathology, Kulsum International Hospital, Islamabad), Dr. Muhammad Saboor (Assistant Professor Haematology, Baqai Medical University, Karachi) and Mr. Muhammad Sarfraz (Head of Microbiology Department, Al-Razi Healthcare Limited, Lahore).

The role of Advisory Board will be to (1) evaluate all proposals for attendance at local/regional meetings, marketing initiatives, requests for office space and respond in a timely manner; (2) review all submitted meeting minutes and address items of concern; (3) provide support via email, teleconference, and through on-site visits as necessary; (4) communicate country-specific statistics for all international examinations as meaningful data is available; (5) provide financial support for agreed upon initiatives (marketing, travel, meeting costs, etc); and (6) provide information on local meetings and reports on current activities through the ASCP BO C quarterly International Certification Report distributed worldwide.
