200th Anniversary of the Independence Revolution of Argentina

H.E. the Argentine Ambassador, Rodolfo J. Martin-Saravia, together with the Federal Minister of Health, Makhdoom Shahabuddin and the Chairman of CDA, Imtiaz Elahi commemoratred the “200th Anniversary of the Independence Revolution of Argentina” in its Argentina Park Islamabad.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health, Senator Kulsom Parveen and the Director of the Federal Services Hospital, Dr. Kiani were present on the occasion. H.E. the Argentine Ambassador on the occasion delivered a short speech remarked the importance of the event for Argentina and referring to the excellent state of the bilateral relations with Pakistan. He informed that the new annex of the Polyclinic hospital will be named Argentina Pavillion.

He further revealed that during the second war between India and Pakistan, Argentina gave a strong help to Pakistan in the United Nations Security Council –first- and in the United Nations General Assembly –later- with the proposal of a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire, the return of the troops that had invaded East Pakistan and the return of the prisoners of war and refugees. The resolution passed with the efforts of the Argentine Mission in the UN helped to stop a terrible and bloody war that could have had much more serious consequences. As a token of appreciation to my country’s commitment to peace and stability, two years later on the 25th May 1973 this beautiful green area was named as Argentina Park. My predecessor the Argentine Ambassador in 1973, Mr. Carlos Silva Guzmán, said on the inauguration ceremony of the Argentina Park: “Distance is no impediment for mutual understanding and friendship. Pakistan and Argentina, despite great physical distance separating them have found a bond of union.” And the then Minister of Presidential Affairs, J.A. Rahim, answered and I quote: “This Park named today as ‘Argentina Park’ will be the living symbol of friendship between the two countries.” End quote. Those words uttered 37 years ago have not been in vain, but have become indeed a reality. Next year in October 2011, we will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of our Diplomatic Relations.

Ealier, he underline that together with the collaboration of the Federal Minister of Health, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, of the Chairman of CDA, Imtiaz Elahi, of the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health, Senator Kulsom Parveen and with the energy of the Director of the Federal Services Hospital, Dr. Kiani, will see in the near future an annex of the Polyclinic Hospital to be built over one third of the land of the Argentina Park; an annex that will be named the Argentina Pavillion of the Federal Services Hospital. It is expected that it will solve the lack of space and facilities that the Policlinic has today. I should add that this Medical Center performs daily a great humanitarian job attending thousands of patients from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and nearby provinces. The CEO of the joint-venture BF Biosciences, Osman Waheed, has already promise to contribute to the training in Argentina of nurses on oncology-care for that hospital and seven others. As you know the new joint-venture is state-of-the-art and will produce medicines against hepatitis B and for the treatment of Cancer; and was inaugurated by H.E. the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani in July 2009.
